The Staff Nurse, Surgical (Internal Only) job offer targets those aiming for a rewarding role within the NHS. With a Band 5 salary range between £31,049 and £37,796 (pro rata), this part-time opportunity enables you to maintain work-life harmony while taking on a challenging nursing post.
This position requires a registered nurse with active NHS registration. Although surgical specialty experience and tracheostomy or laryngectomy skills are handy, comprehensive training will be provided—making this an excellent entry or lateral move for those passionate about surgical patient care.
The Trust provides a robust working environment with many benefits, such as 27 days of holiday (increasing to 33 after 10 years), flexible hours, pension, and a focus on quality, inclusivity, and ongoing development. It is an ideal environment if you’re forward-thinking and eager to grow your clinical career.
Day-to-Day Role Overview
As a staff nurse, you’ll work 25.25 hours per week on a specialist surgery ward. Duties include pre-and post-operative care for patients across vascular, ENT/Maxillo Facial, and urology disciplines.
You’ll perform hands-on patient care, collaborate with colleagues, liaise with other healthcare professionals, and ensure that patients receive exceptional, compassionate treatment rooted in evidence-based practice.
This environment is fast-paced, making organisational and communication skills essential. You’ll help manage complex cases as well as routine post-op recovery, and you’ll take part in ongoing professional development initiatives provided by the Trust.
Your responsibilities include ensuring patient safety, contributing to a positive patient experience, and participating in team meetings and quality improvement.
If eligible under certain schemes (such as Disability Confident), qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview, making the selection process transparent and fair.
Key Pros of This Role
One standout benefit is the wealth of formal and informal learning on offer—perfect for anyone wishing to build knowledge in specialist surgery and patient management.
The Trust supports flexible working practices, enabling you to better balance work and personal commitments without compromising patient care or your own development.
Drawbacks to Consider
This NHS Band 5 position offers a salary below the national average for registered nurses, which may affect those seeking the highest wage available in the field.
It is open strictly to current employees of the Trust, so external candidates cannot apply—limiting broader access to this specific opportunity.
Final Verdict: Is This the Right Fit?
If you’re looking to make a difference in surgical nursing, value a supportive team, and are open to continuous learning, this role comes highly recommended. It’s particularly attractive for those ready to expand their skills or step up within the NHS framework.
